It is smart to live on one income so that when the emergency arises there is a back up plan.
- Save: One of the most crucial tactics in budgeting is to have some savings. Put away money each month until you have a savings fund. Place your savings in an accessible account with a reasonable interest rate. Then pretend that it does not exist. Only use it in the event of an emergency or job loss. If you never experience those situations, you will have a lovely fund for retirement.
- Limit consumer debt: One tendency is for families to use credit cards to live above their current income. While credit cards can be a useful tool, they are so easily abused. We recommend cutting up your credit cards so you are not tempted to use them. However, if you feel that you must keep them, only use them for emergencies.
- Shortfall in Your Budget: If you encounter a shortfall in your budget, you have two valid options. The first option is to get another job so that you can keep your budget in tact. The second option is to cut spending. One of the main places we suggest cutting spending is entertainment. It is a nicety but not a necessity.
